2017 NASH Cup – Day 4 – Pre-Game
Day 4 – The Quarter Finals
There were some significant upsets last night, and the Vegas odds makers are reeling. All remaining players are ranked in the world’s top 100, and the top 3 seeds on each side of the draw have advanced. Two from the qualifier draw – Jan Van Den Herrewegen (BEL) and Nouran El Torky (EGY) – managed big wins last night against opponents who outranked them significantly. Four Canadians – Samantha Cornett; Danielle Letourneau; Nikki Todd; and Nick Sachvie – have advanced.
A rematch of the 2016 final between Misaki Kobayashi (JAP) and Danielle Letourneau (CAN) remains a possibility.
Play will begin at 5:30 today on both courts. Matches are scheduled each hour, but the quarter finals have a history of running late. Despite the arrival of fall today London Ontario is in the middle of a heat wave expecting a record high of 29 degrees (and a feel of 37). The courts will be VERY lively and spectators should expect some long rallies.
There are a number of other things taking place today of note:
A BarBQ lunch was held at London Squash and Fitness (76 Albert St.) from 11:30-1:30 with a portion of each meal going to the Western squash programs. All members and guests invited. This was a great opportunity to meet many of our visiting professionals.
The annual Pro/AM Doubles Calcutta featuring 8 teams began play at noon. Spectators are welcome
The 1st NASH Cup Exhibition Match will take place at Maple City Squash in Chatham tonight at 6:30 featuring Hollie Naughton (40) and Sarah Cardwell (42); Shawn Delierre (80) and Charles Sharpes (53). A sold out crowd is in place and ready for them.
The London Squash doubles court will be closed by 4:30 and converted to a player reception/lounge for the next two days as we prepare to welcome over 90 amateurs to the competition tomorrow.
Reminder: Don’t hold back on posting NASH Cup items on social media. The tournament actively uses Facebook; Twitter; and Instagram. The NASH Cup live stream has been watched in over 35 countries so far, and the facebook post reach is approaching 150,000.
